AA lesson 8

Arctic Adventures – Lesson 8

“I can name letter u and the short /ŭ/ sound.”

Objective: To identify letter u and the short /ŭ/ sound. (RF.K.3)

Materials: letter u sandpaper card, marker, block of Styrofoam or thick cardboard, thumbtacks.

Procedures: Display the letter u sandpaper card. Say, “This is letter u. The sound of u is /ŭ/.” (For a visual reminder, your child can make a fist and gently pound himself in the belly while saying /ŭ/.) Explain that letter u is a vowel and can make several sounds but you will be using the short ŭ sound for now. Model how u is formed. Have your child trace u on the sandpaper card using his index finger. While tracing, have your child repeat, “u says /ŭ/, u says /ŭ/.” Write letter u on cardboard or styrofoam. Your child will press thumbtacks to “trace” letter u.

Conclusion: Ask your child to identify letter u and the /u/ sound.
