Your child can create simple “train cars” to use as response cards for this short vowel sound activity.

Pioneer Days – Lesson 24

I can identify vowel sounds.

Objective: To identify vowel sounds in words. (RF.K.2)

Materials: colored construction paper, dot stickers, popsicle sticks, marker

Procedures: Help your child create five train cars with colored shapes. Use dot stickers for wheels. Then ask her to write a vowel on each car. Glue or tape each car to a popsicle stick. Say a word and your child will hold up the train car with the corresponding vowel sound. Continue with different words.

Conclusion: Have your child write a word for each of the vowels on a chalkboard.
