Here is a phonemic awareness activity to segment and blend words orally. Expect a lot of screams and giggles when the gum band snaps!
Arctic Adventures – Lesson 29
“I can segment words and blend the sounds.”
Objective: To segment words into their individual phonemes and blend them again to say the word. (RF.K.2)
Materials: gum band (rubberband)
Procedures: Give your child a gum band. Say a word such as “cut”. Have your child stretch the gum band while saying each sound in the word /c/ /ŭ/ /t/. Then your child will release one end of the gum band as she repeats the word. Try again with different words. Be prepared for some screams and giggles as the gum band is released!
Conclusion: Let your child be the teacher and tell you cvc words to “stretch” out.
