Barnyard Buddies – Lesson 1 – Blends (dr, sw)

It is good for your child to be exposed to different types of literature such as fables. For this lesson, you will read The Three Billy Goats Gruff  and your child will enjoy crossing the troll’s bridge to practice blends.

Barnyard Buddies – Lesson 1

I can identify the “dr” and “sw” sounds.

Objective: To identify the blends “dr” and “sw.” (RF.K.1, RF.K.3)

Materials: picture cards, dr and sw cards, balance beam, troll doll, Three Billy Goats Gruff book

Procedures: Read the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff or watch a video online. Discuss the story with your child. Display the dr and sw blends. Talk about the sounds in each blend. Set up a balance beam and place the blend cards at one end. Give your child a picture card. He will pretend to be a “goat” crossing the troll’s bridge. When he reaches the other side, he will place his picture card beside the corresponding blend.

Conclusion: Have your child write words such as drum, swim, drip, swing.
