In this “sheep-shearing” lesson, your child will delete a letter in a word to form a new one!
Barnyard Buddies – Lesson 21
I can remove a letter and read the word that remains.
Objective: To remove a letter and read the word that remains. (RF.K.2)
Materials: wipe off board, marker, eraser
Procedures: Read the nursery rhymes, Baa Baa Black Sheep and Mary Had a Little Lamb to your child or watch a video online of these poems. Draw a large sheep on a wipe off board. In the middle of the sheep, ask your child to spell the word “chip”. Then ask her to “shear-off” the letter “c” with her eraser. Ask her what word remains. Continue with other words such as “trip-r”, “shop-s”, “ants-s”, “swing-w”, etc.
Conclusion: Give your child a list of words. Have her tell you a word to write. Then she will say a letter for you to “shear” from the word.
