Making “fossils” is a nice follow-up activity for the book, The Pit. For this lesson, you will need letter stampers from a craft store. Your child is sure to enjoy pressing letter stampers onto play dough to spell cvc words!
Digging Up Dinosaurs – Lesson 37
“I can spell words!”
Objective: To spell cvc words. (RF.K.2)
Materials: play dough, play dough letter stampers, rolling pin
Procedures: Purchase letter stampers and buy or make play dough. Your child will roll out the dough with a rolling pin. Say a cvc word such as “fit” and your child will press the letters into the dough to spell the word. Continue with different words.
Conclusion: Your child will read the words he has stamped. Then use the play dough to make fossils by pressing small dinosaurs, rocks, leaves, etc. into the dough.
