For this lesson, I purchased Wikki Stix online. I thought that would be a good fit since Wikki begins with w. But your child could form w’s with other items such as clay, playdoh, straws, etc.
Digging Up Dinosaurs – Lesson 6
“I can identify letter w and the /w/ sound.”
Objective: To identify letter w and the /w/ sound. (RF.K.1, RF.K.3)
Materials: letter w sandpaper card, Wikki Stix
Procedures: Display the letter w sandpaper card. Say “This is letter w. The sound of w is /w/.” (Be careful to say only the /w/ sound without adding “uh” to it.) Model how w is formed. Have your child trace w on the sandpaper card using his index finger. While tracing, he will repeat, “w says /w/, w says /w/.” Give your child Wikki Stix to make w’s.
Conclusion: Hold up letter w. Ask your child to identify letter Ww and the /w/ sound..
