“I can name letter e and the short /ĕ/ sound!”
Objective: To identify letter e and the /ĕ/ sound. (RF.K.3)
Materials: letter e sandpaper card, letter path page, bingo dauber,
Procedures: Display the letter e sandpaper card. Say. “This is letter e. The sound of e is /ĕ/.” (For a visual reminder, your child will place his thumb and index finger on each side of his mouth pretending to stretch his mouth out like a smile.) Explain that letter e is a vowel and can make several sounds but you will be using the short ĕ sound, as in Ed, for now. Model how e is formed. Have your child trace e on the sandpaper card using his index finger. While tracing, he will repeat, “e says /ĕ/, e says /ĕ/.” Print rows of various letters, making sure to create a path of Ee’s. Your child will stamp all the E’s!
Conclusion: Your child will identify letter Ee and the sound of /ĕ/.
