Here is a fun way to help your child understand the final e rule.

Family Fun – Lesson 4
I can change vowel sounds in words by adding the final e.
Objective: To change vowel sounds in words by adding the final e. (RF.K.3)
Materials: dry-erase board, marker, magic wand.
Procedures: Create a magic wand or purchase one at a dollar store. Ask your child to spell cap on a dry-erase board. Tell her to place the “magic e wand” at the end of the word. Explain that this word no longer says “cap” but by adding the “magic” e at the end of the word, the word has changed to “cape”. When there is a final e, the vowel says its real name. So the ă sound now says ā. Erase the word and continue with different cvc words, adding the final e.
Conclusion: Give your child five words to spell on paper that have the “long a” vowel sound and end with “e”.
