Here is the first Half-Pint lesson plan to teach your child to read! Lessons 1-27  will prepare your child to read the first book in Set 1 – Forest Fun. After we have those foundational skills under our belts, we can move along a little faster to read Set 2 – Around the World and so on. The lessons follow a systematic, sequential and cumulative approach to help your child experience success right from the start. In fact, your child will be able to read the first book after learning only 9 letters and a few sight words. That’s a real confidence builder! I hope you and your child are as excited as I am to begin this new adventure! I tried to make the lessons easy to follow and I included the common core standards for teachers who may need to list them on their own lesson plans. I included an “I Can” statement in each lesson for your child, as well. I welcome any questions, comments, or suggestions. I will do my best to help you in any way possible. So gather up your materials and let’s get started! Thank you for joining our Half-Pint reading adventure!

letter t tape

Forest Fun – Lesson 1

“I can name letter t and the /t/ sound.”

Objective: To identify letter t and the /t/ sound. (RF.K.1, RF.K.3)

Materials: letter t sandpaper card, masking tape, paper, paint, paintbrush

Procedures: Display the letter t sandpaper card. Say, “This is letter t. The sound of t is /t/.” (Be careful to say only the /t/ sound without adding “uh” to it.) Model how letter t is formed. Have your child trace letter t on the sandpaper card using his index finger. While tracing, he will repeat, “t says /t/, t says /t/. Form Tt with masking tape on paper. Your child will paint over the Tt. When dry, he will peel back the tape to reveal the letters.

Conclusion: Ask your child to identity letter t and the /t/ sound.

I forgot to mention…if you want to create a set of homemade sandpaper letters, I posted directions on the October 28 blog!
