Learning to segment words in order to be able to spell them is an important part of reading and writing. Children like to manipulate letters to spell words. (Previous posts October 31- November 8 will give you several ideas of moveable alphabets that you can create.)

Forest Fun – Lesson 13

“I can segment and spell words.”

Objective: To segment words and spell them with letter tiles. (RF.K.2)

Materials: letter tiles (t, b, c, m, a), picture cards (bat, cat, mat, cab, tab), notecard with three lines

Procedures: Draw three lines in a row on a note card. Your child will choose a picture card such as mat and name the picture. Then he will tap out the three sounds he hears to segment the word. Ask what sound comes at the beginning of the word and he will place the letter m on the first line. Ask what sound does he hear in the middle of the word? He will place the letter a on the middle line. Ask what sound comes at the end of the word? He will place the letter t on the last line. Then he will read the word again. Repeat the process with the other picture cards.

Conclusion: Reverse roles. You are the student spelling the words. On occasion, make a mistake for your “teacher” to catch!
