Here is another lesson to go along with the book, A Bat! Using a moveable alphabet on a cute workmat is lots of fun. This lesson is a terrific way for your child to isolate beginning and ending sounds in words, which is very helpful in learning to read.
Forest Fun – Lesson 31
“I can make new words by changing one letter.”
Objective: To make new words by changing one letter. (RF.K.2)
Materials: bat workmat, plastic letters, crayons
Procedures: Draw a large bat shape on paper with two wings and a center body. Place letter a in the center section. On the first wing, place letter b and on the second wing, place letter t. Ask your child to read the word. Then say, “Change bat to cat”. She will trade the b for letter c. Next, ask her to change cat to cap. She will change the last letter. Continue the game with other changes such as cap to map, map to mat, mat to hat, hat to sat, etc.
Conclusion: Your child may color or decorate the bat.
