Let’s continue on with another phonemic awareness activity. Your child will be listening for the position of sounds in words without using actual letters. I also wanted to mention that throughout the lesson plans, when you see the backslash lines around a letter, such as /d/, you are saying only the sound and not the letter name. In the photo, there are cvc picture cards, but you do not need to use pictures unless you want to. The chalk was just to show you that I used three colors for the lines. Your child will not be writing letters on the lines. This lesson is only about “hearing” the sounds.

Forest Fun – Lesson 41

“I can determine if a sound comes at the beginning, middle or end of a word.”

Objective: To determine if a phoneme comes at the beginning, middle or end of a word. (RF.K.2)

Materials: chalkboard, chalk

Procedures: This is a phonemic awareness activity that involves no letters, just listening. Draw three lines in a row on a chalkboard. Explain to your child that each line represents a sound (phoneme) in a word. You will say a cvc word to your child such as dog. Tell your child to point to the line that represents /d/. Your child will point to the first line. Then say /g/ and your child will point to the last line, and for /ŏ/, he will point to the middle line. Continue with different cvc words.

Conclusion: Your child can be the teacher and isolate sounds for you to point to the lines.
