It’s time to learn a new vowel! In this lesson, your child will learn the short o sound which will allow her to read several new cvc words for the next book! Combining learning with a snack is always extra fun!
Forest Fun – Lesson 42
“I can name letter o and the short /ŏ/ sound.”
Objective: To identify letter o and the /ŏ/ sound. (RF.K.1, RF.K.3)
Materials: letter o sandpaper card, construction paper, construction paper, marker, scissors, glue, cheerios cereal
Procedures: Display the letter o sandpaper card. Tell your child this is letter o. Say, “the sound of o is /ŏ/.” (For a visual reminder, she will make a circular motion around her mouth when she says the /ŏ/ sound.) Explain that letter o is a vowel and can make several sounds but you will be using the short ŏ sound for now. Model how letter o is formed. Have your child trace letter o on the sandpaper card using her index finger. While tracing, have your child repeat, “o says /ŏ/, o says /ŏ/.” Make an o on construction paper and cut it out. Have your child glue cheerios (or any o shaped cereal) to the letter o. Allow her to eat the extras!
Conclusion: Ask your child to identify o and to say 3 words that begin with /ŏ/.
