Tracing tactile letters with their finger, while saying the letter name and sound, helps children remember the letters and sounds better. Sandpaper letters can be a little expensive to buy from a catalogue but you can create your own for a few dollars. First I drew and cut out my own letter stencils. Then I traced them in reverse on the back of sheets of sandpaper and cut those out. (Be prepared to get goosebumps from the texture of cutting sandpaper!) Then I glued the letters to notecards. And there you have it! Your own homemade sandpaper letters!
