Over-sized dice are lots of fun to blend sounds to read words. For this game, your child will blend a beginning consonant sound with a word family. This skill is called onset-rime and helps build a strong foundation for reading and spelling.
Jumping Jungle – Lesson 16
“I can blend onset and rimes!”
Objective: To blend onset and rimes. (RF.K.2)
Materials: Large dice, gallon-size zip lock bags, oak tag, scissors, marker, clear tape, 12 x 12 x 12 inch shipping boxes, contact paper
Procedures: Create two over-sized dice with 12 x12 x 12 inch shipping boxes. Tape the boxes closed and cover with contact paper. Tape a gallon size Ziploc bag to each side. Cut oak tag squares so that they will just fit into the Ziploc bags. Write a letter on each square for one die and a word family on each square for the other die. Place the squares in the zip lock bags and seal them. (By using a re-sealable bag, you can change out the letters and word family cards.) You and your child will roll the dice and read the words that are formed.
Conclusion: For extra fun list the words on a large wipe-off board under real or nonsense words. Count the words to see which list is longer.
