Here is a cute phonemic awareness lesson to go along with the book, The Log. This activity will help your child listen for individual words in a sentence and to be able to tell the position of each word, laying a strong foundation for when she is writing her own sentences.
Jumping Jungle – Lesson 25
“I can listen for words in a sentence!”
Objective: To locate words in a sentence. (RF.K.1)
Materials: brown construction paper, scissors, marker, plastic ant
Procedures: Cut out a log shape and draw four lines in a row to represent words in a sentence. You will say a sentence that has four words such as, I see six ants.” Then say one of the words in the sentence, “see” Your child will place the ant on the second line because “see” is the second word in the sentence. Continue with another word in the sentence, “ants”. Your child will move the ant to the fourth line and so on.
Conclusion: Let your child make up a sentence with four words. You will listen and move the ant. Then enjoy a snack together of “ants on a log.” (Spread peanut butter or cream cheese on celery and add raisins for ants.)
