This activity goes along very well with the story, The Bad Bug. And what could be more fun than using plastic bugs to practice phonemic awareness skills!

Jumping Jungle – Lesson 29

“I can count phonemes in words.”

Objective: To hear and count individual phonemes in words. (RF.K.2)

Materials: 4 plastic bugs, four-block grid

Procedures: Explain to your child how each bug will represent a phoneme (sound) in a word. Say a word such as “at”. “At” has two sounds so your child will place a bug in two of the squares. Say a different word such as “flag,” There are four sounds in flag so your child will cover four squares with a bug. Continue with various words.

Conclusion: Reverse roles and play the game again! Being the teacher really helps your child to think!
