Segmenting words into syllables is an important phonemic awareness skill to build a foundation for reading and writing. This little hopping activity is perfect for segmenting words and it goes along great with Book 5, I Will Hop. In addition to segmenting words into syllables, your child can also practice segmenting CVC words into individual phonemes. Example: hop – /h/ /o/ /p/
Jumping Jungle – Lesson 32
“I can segment words into syllables.”
Objective: To segment words into syllables. (RF.K.2)
Materials: small kangaroo clipart, tongue depressor or popsicle stick, scissors, glue
Procedures: Cut out a small kangaroo using clipart and glue it to a popsicle stick. Say a word to your child such as “safari.” Your child will repeat the word and make the kangaroo hop three times because “safari” has three syllables. Continue with words of varying amounts of syllables.
Conclusion: Reverse roles and your child can say words for you to make the kangaroo hop.
