Jungle Safari – Lesson 21

“I can create a new word by changing one letter sound.”

Objective: To create a new word by changing one letter sound. (RF.K.2)

Materials: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin JR. and John Archambault, brown and green construction paper, scissors, glue, letters, notecard, marker

Procedures: Read the book, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom to your child. Make a palm tree out of construction paper. Place letters on the tree. At the bottom of the tree, place a notecard with three lines. Tell your child to spell mud. Then ask your child to change mud to mad by changing one letter. Then change mad to bad, bad to bat, bat to cat, cat to cut, cut to rut, rut to run, and so on.

Conclusion: When finished, plan to read the story again, as your child is SURE to ask!
