It’s always fun to take learning outdoors when possible. Combining physical exercise with learning is even better! In this lesson, your child can review letter sounds by running to put the objects in the baskets with the corresponding beginning letter sounds. This is a fun follow-up lesson to the book, Run.

Jungle Safari – Lesson 8

“I can match objects to their beginning letter sound.”

Objective: To match objects to their beginning sound. (RF.K.3)

Materials: colorful bins from a dollar store, letter cards, tape, objects

Procedures: Purchase several colorful plastic bins from a dollar store. Tape a letter card to each bin. Then take learning outdoors! At one end of the yard, place the bins. At the other end, place a box of objects (three for each letter that are safe to run with). These items could be: a block, book, ball, sock, slipper, sandal, glove, gorilla, gum, and so on. Your child will choose an object from the box, run to place it in the correct bin and run back again to choose another object. Continue until the box is empty.

Conclusion: Check the bins with your child to see if each item was placed in the correct bin. Then have backyard races together!
