Children love nursery rhymes and the Medieval theme is perfect for using them. Here is a cute activity for “Sing a Song of Sixpence” to practice the “ing” word family or word ending. Your child will love making the blackbirds out of circles.
Medieval Magic – Lesson 2
“I can read cvc words with ‘ing’.”
Objective: To read cvc words with “ing”. (RF.K.2)
Materials: pie tin, blackbird cutouts, white crayon, orange beaks, wiggly eyes
Procedures: Create birds from two circles. Glue on the eyes and beaks. Use a white crayon to write words on the birds such as sing, king, ring, ding, ping, and wing. Place the birds in a pie tin. Sing or play a recording of the nursery rhyme song “Sing a Song of Sixpence.” Draw attention to the “ing” words in the song such as sing and king. Ask your child to pull a blackbird out of the pie and read the word to you. Continue until the pie tin is empty.
